英国叫大不列颠的原因是还有一个小不列颠？

其实，“Great Britain”中的“Great”，不是伟大的“Great”，而是BIG！

因为法国有个“Brittany”有一个“Little Britain”也就是小不列颠。而且古英语中Great 本义就是BIG源于德语“Gross”，荷兰语“groot”。

公元前148年希腊学者Claudius Ptolemy在其著作《Almagest》中第一次用“Great Britain”以区分“Little Britain”。

“Great Britain”是岛名，指的是不列颠群岛中最大的岛，也可以缩写为“Britain”。England，Wales，Scotland 都只是其一部分。 17世纪，詹姆斯一世将其用于国名自封大不列颠王国。 1801年不列颠王国和爱尔兰王国合并，更名为The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland。

1922年，爱尔兰地区独立，剩了一小块给英国。于是，更名为The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland。

现在应该没有傻傻分不清大不列颠，联合王国和英格兰的同学了吧？
